2013-06-12: サンドイッチとおにぎりの二人三脚

就職活動中雨の日の面接とランチにブリート(burrito) ― 2013/06/12

このところ日本の梅雨のようなうっとうしい日々にある。

再び雨降りの面接日だった。

高速道路を１時間くらい走行してBoxbouroughの学校の面接に向かった。そこはかなりローカルな雰囲気だった。面接する学校を確認してから更に４〜５km走りやっとスーパーマーケットとCVSなどがまとめてあるところに車をつけた。幸いそこにJohnny Rocketsのハンバーガーのお店があったのでそこで待機することにした。

もしかしたら次の私たちの住むステージになるかもしれない地域はどんなところか少しでも見ておきたい。そして見知らぬ所を通り過ぎるだけでも、私には楽しみの一つでもある。

20年以上も前のことだが、イタリアのラヴェンナでモザイクスクールに短期留学したことがあった。モザイクの基礎技法を学びオリジナル作品を創り終えてから、北イタリアを廻り、その後ユーレイパスを使って気ままなヨーロッパひとり旅へ流れていった。観光地というより美術館とギャラリーのリストを手にしてヨーロッパを廻っていた。そんな旅を一人で２ヶ月もやっていたのだから、どこへ行っても一人での時間潰しが結構へいちゃらでちっとも苦痛でないのだ。なのでサンドイッチの面接に同行してカフェで待っているのはなんでもないことだ。

今日の面接も１時間くらいだった。校長先生と４人の先生たちとの面接だったようだ。

ベストを尽くして失敗もなく無事終わらせる。あとは結果待ちだ。

帰り道ブリートのレストランがあったのでランチに入り、

サンドイッチの大好物ブリートを注文。

サンドイッチはポーク入り、私はベジタブルで注文。

　なにせボリームがすっごい！

昨日はボストンのチェルシー地区のある学校の校長先生との電話再面接だった。

今夜、その学校の不採用通知をメールで受取った。

しかしまたもう一つボストン近くの学校からの電話面接の通知を受ける。

金曜日の２時だ。金曜日は11時からもう一校の面接日でもある。

期待と不安が入り交じった不安定な精神状態が繰り返されていく。

しかしこうして面接の通知を受けるだけ希望の兆しが持てる。本当に本当に僅かのチャンスだと思う。不採用になるとほんとにガックリするものだ。気を持ち直して再び、僅かな僅かなチャンスに挑み続けていく50代のサンドイッチなのだ。

Currently in Massachusetts and probably in all of the United States there are more people looking for a job as a school teacher than there are jobs available. So, this means that many, many people apply for the same job.

For one job interview that I had for a position as a 3rd Grade teacher in Elementary School, about 160 people applied but only 20 were chosen for an interview. It is great to get the interview in this case. But you still have to compete with 19 other people who were also interviewed for the job. For another position where I did interview today, 290 people applied and only 9 were chosen for the interview. It is great to know that you are the in the "best" 9 out of 290 people but you still have to be the "best" out of 9 people to actually get the job.

You will be asked many questions in an interview. Some will be about teaching and some may be about your character or how you handle different situations that are not exactly about teaching students. Some of these questions can be hard and it is hard to think of an answer just on the spot (right away). So, I prepare for my interviews in advance but trying to find many types of questions that might be asked and then I write my answer and study it just in case I am asked that quesion. I also research the school before each interview so that I can show that I am interested in the school and can talk about the school with the principal or administrator who interviews me.

Of course, you must dress in a suit or business clothes for an interview and you must never be late. So I am usually 30 minutes early.

Most of the schools in Massachusetts want to hire teachers with at least 2 years experience. Sometimes they want 3 or even 5 years of experience.

This makes it very hard for new teachers with one year experience or teachers who have just finished college and have 0 years of teaching experience.

We just have to be lucky to get a first job which will then help get the next job.

Some people take a position as an assistant teacher even though they have a full teacher license just to get experience to apply in a year or two for a full teacher position. Assistant teachers make a lot less money than full teachers.
